Budget (301/366)

This is a poor substitute for the photo I wish I'd gotten:  my hermit crab crawling up my sleeve and snuggling against my wrist.  It was so cute, but I would have disturbed her if I'd gone to get my camera from the other room.

Writer's Block (297/366)

I thought I'd be free from the angst-filled hours in front of an empty screen after I finished my thesis, but turns out I have to write things for my real job, too.  I'll never be free ...

Stick a Fork in 'Em (293/366)

... because Mostest Favoritest of All Time Sports Team is done.

They were gallant and courageous until the end, but their season is over, our hopes dashed — until the spring!

Bad Luck (288/366)

I'm crushed! Just as I had gotten my photos up to date, my computer experienced a catastrophic system failure! It's done! Toast! Kaput! I'm at the library on my lunch break, but I'm unable to post photos here, so I'm not sure what's to become of my site, for now, at least. We have an appointment at the ICU - the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. Perhaps the genius will be able to get my computer back to life and recover what's been lost. Here's hoping!

English Leather (284/366)

My scrunch boots died today.  The heels were long scuffed and wearing through, and the zippers had been finicky for a while, but today was the day they finally gave up the ghost: the plastic loops of the right boot's zipper unraveled and pulled apart around the ankle, rendering it unzippable.

I bought these boots for thirty quid while I was studying in England.  They felt so warm and English around my ankles.  I wore them to class and to the pub and on the plane home to America, loving them even as they grew shabby in the years since.

Like Sprinkles on a Cupcake (283/366)

Butterflies!  Today my friend and I took a trip to our city's new insectarium to celebrate my birthday.   Accompanying me was a generous gift on her part because she's not quite as crazy about bugs as I am — few are, I'm afraid.  But we both thought the museum was really neat, and there was no doubt in anyone's mind about the beauty of the butterfly garden.  The colors were bright and the butterflies fluttered around us happily.  They were as pretty as a birthday cake!

Photo Op (282/366)

It's not often you get your photo taken with a giant chicken in lederhosen.

What's the quirkiest photo op you've ever gotten?  Have you ever had to dress up as a character for work, or had a fun interaction with a character?

Smashed (281/366)

I took a couple of pieces of leftover cake home after an event at work tonight.  They were balanced inside little styrofoam plates, tottering on the passenger seat.  I had a twenty-five minute drive, and for twenty-two minutes the little stack of cake rested contentedly.  But I bet you can guess what happened next.
With three minutes to go, I needed to change lanes so I could turn left on my street.  I watched a truck pass me, checked my mirrors, checked my blind spot, began the transition, looked forward again, and saw that the car in front of me was turning right, slowing almost to a stop.  I braked, and my pagoda of cake flew forward, landing frosting-side-up on the floor of the car, a trail of crumbs scattered on the mat.

Hot Pink (278/366)

Is it a bacterial colony?  A fur-covered sea anemone?  Or a micro-fiber duster?
What ordinary objects do you have around the house that are a little on the fanciful side?

On another note, I've happily made it through a two-month backlog of photos.  After one new job, one cross-country move, one new apartment, and two hurricanes, I'm glad to be back and looking forward to catching up on other 365ers' photos, too.  For you viewing pleasure (I hope), scroll through!

Domestic Bliss (277/366)

The warm glow of the light over the stove just about sums up my mood as I a) finally finished unpacking and b) baked cookies!  Oh, home sweet home!

New Crabitat (276/366)

I added a new hiding place to my hermit crabs' lair today - they were scuffling over their climbing branch, and I figured they might need a little more space and a few more options. Here, Niamh is checking out the roof deck of her new apartment.  (That's her in the green shell.)  She realised I was taking her photo with a start, and started to pull back in her shell.

Gorilla Hands (274/366)

This banana was so cute, and so tiny it made me feel like I was a gorilla when I held it in my ordinarily delicate hand.
